SEO in 2015

SEO, SEO, SEO...Search Engine Optimization. That's about all that anyone talks about today. Everyone has an opinion and many are 'experts'.  Is SEO an Art, a Science?  There's a lot of chatter and it's tough to break through.

SEO changes often so staying on top of it is key.  I found the Infographic below helpful in understanding SEO particularly the comment about the importance of Social Media in SEO

The Ghost Runner

It happened again last weekend.  As I approached a runner, I raised my hand to acknowledge him and ... NO RESPONSE! What, am I a ghost?

I'm pretty sure that this guy was intimidated by my outfit and form.  Tights and functional top and nice pitter patter running style.  That's the only explanation for why he didn't respond to my wave.  Yes I sharpened up my poise and stopped heaving as I approached him to be more impressive but he was younger than me by 30+ years...How could he miss seeing me?

I must be the ghost runner.  Yes, that's it. Like the Emperor wearing invisible clothes, I'm invisible. To test that theory I'll trying running naked this weekend.  I'll wave and prance around at runners coming toward me and see if they wave back.  If I'm not nvisible I bet I'll only get a couple of hundred metres from home before I'm sitting in the back of a Police Squad Car butt naked trying to explain to the arresting Officer that I'm invisible.

Boooo!

Until next time...

An Optimized Web Site

An optimized web site begins with a plan:  What do you want the web site to do?  The answer to that question drives the function and form of the web site.  At every step it is important to keep in mind that you want to make it easy for your site visitors to find your site (SEO+SEM+Social Media), navigate it (usability) and update it easily.  This infographic show the steps involved in planning, designing and optimizing a web site:

Wave or don't wave

When you are out running do you wave at another runner?  That question crossed my mind recently. I was out for my regular early morning run and about half way through as I rounded a corner I noticed another runner heading toward me.  He was about my age and seemed to be running at about my pace.  I was on the right side of the sidewalk and he was on the left so there was no issue of collision.  As we got closer, I raised my hand in acknowledgement expecting a response.  He just ran by.  No acknowledgement...nothing.  I could have been a ghost.  And that got me thinking:  What's the appropriate way to acknowledge a fellow runner?  Wave or don't wave?

This may have been an isolated incident.  The vast majority of runners I encounter give some form of acknowledgement:  a wave, nod of the head or even a grunted 'Morning'.  It feels good to give the acknowledgement and even better to get it.  Kindred soles and all that.  When I didn't get a response, I felt snubbed.  Had I done something to offend him?

Maybe he was totally focused on some aspect of intense training.  I know when I'm running hill repeats I am absorbed by form and breathing.  While gasping for air toward the top of a hill I don't have the energy to wave.

It could have been that he was zoned out listening to his music.  He had headphones on so could have been lost in a favourite running tune.

Maybe I pissed him off with my speed and agility....nah, couldn't have been that.

This was probably that one in a million runner who prefers to stay totally in their zone while running. I understand that and respect him if that's the case.  It won't change my habit of waving to other runners though.  It makes me feel good.

Until next time...

Digital Marketing Trends 2015

We're nearly 6 months into 2015 and the predictions in marketing trends keep coming. Three that top my list of trends to plan for:
  1. Mobile.  Everything available anytime on my mobile device.
  2. Visual Storytelling.  Being able to tell a story well is the new baseline of marketing.
  3. Acting on Data.  It's not good enough to be able to measure everything, tell me what it means.

Running's next act

Like life itself, running goes through similar stages from birth through maturity to eventual decline. I've learned that the secret to both running and life is to focus on the present:  enjoy the moment, don't worry about the past or stress about the future.  It's been a hard won lesson.

I started running to lose weight and manage my blood pressure.  Over 30 years of running I've been pretty successful at both:  No prescription medication, no hospital visits other than the self inflicted visits to Emergency.  Running in my early days was slow and ponderous.  Dressed in heavy sweats I was super conscious of my size and weight and ran in the dark so no one would see me lumbering along.  Babies learning to walk were more graceful.  Like an infant, I kept at it though.

I graduated to racing 10K's at the height of the 10K running craze.  At a great weight and with a waist size I liked, I did my best running and achieved my personal best.  It felt like the best teenage years: Lots of personal growth yet still within a protected and safe environment.

Then I got serious.  After a stumble...litterally I fell off my bicycle in my first Triahalon...I got the bug for Sprint Triathalons.  This was my sweet spot.  I bought a Tri bike that was uncomfortable to ride but delivered performance in a race.  Sally got me a skin tight one piece Tri Suit that I could wear through the Swim, Bike and Run.  I was at my optimum weight and fitness.  Like a young adult I felt comfortable in being at the peak of my game drawing on my experience while building a family.

Then the crash.  Literally.  I got disillusioned with running after I hung up my triatholon gear.  How could I follow the excitement and success of two years of successful triathalons?  It took some time and there were a number of false starts, tangents and setbacks but recently I've come full circle and come back to 10K running.  Although I missed both of the spring 10K's in Toronto, I've ended the past few years at the Reggae Marathon 10K in Negril, Jamaica.  I now get a ton of enjoyment watching the next generation enjoy their personal success in running.  Courtney and Andrew are excellent runners and can tear it up at 10K and Half Marathon distances.  Holden can't be beat over 40 Metres...he's the powerful sprinter and exploded on the football field at Acadia.

Last week I overheard Andrew talking to some friends about his running goal in a 10K.  Both he and his twin brother Courtney have been running half marathons and 10K's over the past few years. The three of us have run in Reggae Marathon a number of times, as well as a Half Marathons in Toronto. Although he didn't achieve the result he wanted, he bested over 25,000 runners on a hot and humid morning in Toronto.  I was proud of him.  It's been nice to see the next generation following in my footsteps...literally!

For my next act?  I have no idea really other than the desire to keep running.

Until next time...

Mobile: Turned on and staying on

There used to be a time when we could be unconnected.  Not any more.  And it's not just the digital natives.

Summer Running!

Ahhh...summer running!

Here in Toronto we went from winter to summer over a couple of weeks.  Just two weeks ago morning temperatures were below freezing and I was running in full winter gear.  Fast forward a couple of weeks...now in short tights and a T shirt.  So much for the four seasons here in Canada.  Can we blame it on Global Warming?

As you may have guessed by now, I love summer and summer running.  The hotter the better.  I love to sweat and summer running means I sweat a lot.  On a long run I can loose 3 kilos or water!  Even though my winter running gear doesn't weigh a lot, it is restrictive so being able to run in short tights and a T Shirt is liberating.  I feel like I've shed a few pounds.

Summer running in my neighbourhood early in the morning means I get to hear the birds singing.  It helps on those mornings when I'm huffing and puffing during my hill repeat runs.  And while I can't actually see the sun break the horizon, I look out for the moment on a run when it peeks over the trees.

Yes, I do love my summer running!

Until next time...
