Shredding all documents that contain personal information, protecting passwords (on-line and with debit/credit cards), changing passwords regularly...these are some of the things you can do to minimize the damage. You can search on-line for lots more information and things you can do.
Unfortunately because we all live in the digital world, it is absolutely impossible to guarantee that your information will not be compromised. Don't be reactive...there are things you can do to be proactive. Just don't procrastinate.
