Winter running tips

I run outside all year.  Rain, snow, hot cold...not much gets in the way of me gearing up and heading outside.  On those super cold days I may run more slowly and my runs will be shorter but those runs seem more rewarding.  Safe running in the winter requires care and attention.  Here are some good winter running tips:

3 steps to guaranteed running success

I'm not a natural runner!  Far from it.  I prefer sitting in front of the TV:  Couch potato.  I don't have long legs:  Big thighs! I don't listen to advice:  I've made a lot of running mistakes.  But after 30 years of running I've found the secrets to guaranteed running success.  And generous person that I am, here they are:

1. Get up!  Off the couch.  Nothing's going to happen until you take that first step and that first step only happens when you get up, tie up your running shoes and head outside.  And when bad things happen, and they will, you've got to get back up.  Remember the Chumbawumba song, "Tubthumping":  "I get knocked down but I get up again". Yeah, cliche I know but true.
2. Walk!  In other words, that first step can be to go out for a walk.  Heck, on my first 'run' I spent more time walking...shuffling actually...than running.  And my 'running' wasn't pretty...I ran in the dark!  So start walking first with the goal to to running.
3. Run!  Start slowly. I did. I was slow at first, very slow.  But I kept at it. The secret?  I had an end goal of losing 40+ lbs and lowering my blood pressure. On those mornings when I prefered sleeping in...and those weekends when I craved slouching on the couch in front of the TV, that focus got up and out.
