- Get up! Off the couch. Nothing's going to happen until you take that first step and that first step only happens when you get up, tie up your running shoes and head outside. And when bad things happen, and they will, you've got to get back up. Remember the Chumbawumba song, "Tubthumping": "I get knocked down but I get up again". Yeah, cliche I know but true.
- Walk! In other words, that first step can be to go out for a walk. Heck, on my first 'run' I spent more time walking...shuffling actually...than running. And my 'running' wasn't pretty...I ran in the dark! So start walking first with the goal to to running.
- Run! Start slowly. I did. I was slow at first, very slow. But I kept at it. The secret? I had an end goal of losing 40+ lbs and lowering my blood pressure. On those mornings when I prefered sleeping in...and those weekends when I craved slouching on the couch in front of the TV, that focus got up and out.
